This film marks Heard’s return to acting following the controversial 2022 defamation trial, which brought her and her ex-husband Johnny Depp to public attention and exposed Heard in particular to harsh internet criticism. Heard claimed in court that Warner Bros., which owns DC Comics, “didn’t want to include [her]” and that the role she played in Aquaman 2 had been considerably scaled back from the original screenplay. Variety claims that allegations that Heard featured in the sequel for just “about 10 minutes” first surfaced, and the trailer has reignited those speculations.

Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, also known as Arthur Curry, is introduced to audiences in the new video. In this episode, Aquaman teams up with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to battle Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who threatens to “kill Aquaman and everything he holds dear.” Following pandemic-related delays, the sequel, which is scheduled to hit theaters five years after the original film, has been eagerly awaited by DC fans. But given her remarks and the accompanying rumors, many who watched the trial have also been interested in Heard’s participation. Many people have been interpreting the new trailer’s implications in their comments on social media.

All concerns over Heard and her participation in the film, coupled with reports of appearances by Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck (who most recently acted in The Flash) and significant reshoots, landed on director James Wan. He addressed the rumors of Heard’s purportedly diminished part in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on September 13. According to Wan, the second film was always going to center on Arthur’s connection with his brother. The second movie was always intended to be about Arthur and Orm, Wan said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “The first ‘Aquaman’ about Arthur and Mera’s adventure. Therefore, whereas the first film was an action-romance, the second was an action-bromance film. That will be the end of it.

Given that the new co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, intend to rebuild the brand with new stars and movies, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom may be the final film in this iteration of the DC Extended Universe. The two haven’t made it clear where Momoa’s Aquaman fits into their new world, although Gunn recently said that the Blue Beetle character from their most recent film wouldkeep playing a part in the DC Universe. Where Momoa, Heard, and the rest stand is still up for debate.

In addition to Momoa, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Patrick Wilson play Orm and Black Manta, respectively, in the movie. Additionally, the movie stars Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, Willem Dafoe, and Dolph Lundgren in roles they previously played in the first movie.

On December 20, “Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom” will be screened in cinemas.
