A Big Showdown at the 2023 National Bank Open : Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz

Holger Rune discussed his goals in relation to Carlos Alcaraz’s Wimbledon victory while he was in Montreal preparing for the 2023 National Bank Open.

The Dane finished this year’s Wimbledon in the quarterfinals. Then, due to a lower back ailment, he withdrew from the Croatia Open. Rune will return to competition at the Canadian event after nearly two months of therapy and recuperation.

The 20-year-old was questioned in a pre-tournament news conference about whether Carlos Alcaraz’s victory at Wimbledon inspired him more to go after a Grand Slam championship.

Holger Rune replied that he was focused on his own objectives and that he still had the remaining, keeping his statement succinct and to the point. He declared that his goal is to perform to the best of his ability while avoiding being influenced by Alcaraz’s course.

About Big 3

Holger Rune brushed off the recent talk about the “Big-3,” which included him, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner, noting that only Alcaraz had thus far achieved Grand Slam success while also acknowledging that he needed to improve.

Holger Rune addressed rumors that he, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz were the “new Big Three” at a press conference held prior to the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

He rejected the analogies, saying it was premature to make such conclusions and pointing out that only Alcaraz had so far won significant victories. He gave himself some wiggle room, acknowledging his youth and the time he had ahead of him.

Rune will be looking for his second championship at the competition that gets underway on August 7 after winning his first championship of the year at the Munich Open.

Even before he won the Slams, I was always really driven. I have goals I want to achieve, and this year presents opportunities to do so, so I’m going to go for them, stated Rune.

Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune will compete in the same half of the 2023 National Bank Open.

Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz may meet one another in the semifinals of the 2023 National Bank Open due to their placement in the same half of the draw, which was made public on Friday, August 4.

This will be the duo’s first outing since their Wimbledon quarterfinal matchup this year.

Alcaraz previously took part in the competition in 2022, where he was defeated by Tommy Paul in the first round. However, the current US Open and Wimbledon champion has improved greatly since then and is probably one of the top contenders for the crown.

In his previous tournament appearance in 2022 against Pablo Carreno Busta, Holger Rune also lost in the first round. Since then, Rune has developed steadily, amassing a remarkable 37-13 win-loss record and looking to secure his first ATP Finals berth.

He will compete in the competition in hopes of winning his second championship of the year.

First-round byes have been granted to both athletes. In the second round, Carlos Alcaraz will face the winner of the contest between Ben Shelton and Bernabe Zapata Miralles, and Rune will face the victor of the contest between Emil Ruusuvuori and Marcos Giron.

However, they will have to overcome some challenging opponents in the preliminary rounds of National Bank Open if they are to face off in the semifinals. While Rune might have to fight Schwartzman or Cerundolo, Alcaraz might face opponents like Hurkacz or Bublik.

In Toronto, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Andrey Rublev are further challengers for the title in National Bank Open.
