Golden Globe Awards type

Nine prizes, including picture (comedy or musical), screenplay, director, leading actress for Margot Robbie, supporting actor for Ryan Gosling, and three different entries in the original song category, are up for grabs for Greta Gerwig’s pastel-colored satire.

Golden Globe Awards nominee

After losing out on nominations for Lady Bird and Little Women, this is Gerwig’s first time on the directing shortlist. With this haul, Barbie becomes the second-most-nominated movie in Globe history, behind only Nashville with eleven nominations.

Along with sequels to John Wick, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman, and Mission: Impossible, Barbie is also nominated for a new prize for blockbuster films, along with Oppenheimer, a movie whose odd association with Barbie drastically increased the summer box office. The Super Mario Bros. cartoon and the Taylor Swift concert footage were also included.

With eight nominations, including leading actor Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt for supporting actress, and Robert Downey Jr. for supporting actor, Christopher Nolan’s epic biography of atomic physicist Robert Oppenheimer is trailing behind.

wretched things With seven nominations, Yorgos Lanthimos’s fantastical tale of a lady reborn with a baby’s brain fared better than anticipated, coming in second place to Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

Golden Globe Awards Drama category

Lily Gladstone is nominated in the comparable drama category, while Emma Stone is up for top actress in a comedy or musical for the former. Annette Bening for the swimming thriller Nyad, Sandra Huller for the Anatomy of a Fall, which won the Palme d’Or, Greta Lee for the romantic comedy Past Lives, and Cailee Spaeny for Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla are the competitors Gladstone confronts.

Stone, on the other hand, will see a very varied range of performances, including Fantasia Barrino from the new musical adaptation of The Color Purple, Natalie Portman’s biting melodrama in May December, and Jennifer Lawrence’s raucous portrayal in No Hard Feelings.

With his role as a cudgemeonly teacher in Alexander Payne’s 1970 comedy The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti leads the field in the equivalent male category, surpassing Matt Damon (Air), Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario), Joaquin Phoenix (Beau is Afraid), Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), and Timothee Chalamet (Wonka).

Da’Vine Joy Randolf, his co-star, is also highly anticipated in the supporting actress cast, which also stars Rosamund Pike for Saltburn, Emily Blunt for Oppenheimer, Jodie Foster for Nyad, Julianne Moore for May December, and Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple.

Along with Bradley Cooper for his Leonard Bernstein biography, Maestro, Barry Keoghan received a leading actor in a drama nomination for Emerald Fennell’s controversial second movie. Three further candidates are portraying actual people: Colman Domingo in the civil rights drama Rustin, Murphy in Oppenheimer, and Leonardo DiCaprio in Killers of the F

All of Us Strangers, starring Andrew Scott as a screenwriter who meets his deceased parents, is also nominated for the award; however, Andrew Haigh’s picture, which dominated last week’s British Independent picture Awards, only received this one nomination.

In addition to Oppenheimer, another British director’s film, The Zone of Interest, is making waves in both the festival and mainstream Hollywood scenes. Christian Friedel and Huller play Helga and Rudolf Höss, who built a dream house for themselves and their kids just outside the gates of Auschwitz, where Höss served as camp commandant.

The movie is vying for best drama, best foreign language picture, and Mica Levi’s best score. A24, the distributor, and Universal, the company that distributed Oppenheimer, both received a total of 11 nominations. Barbie’s haul helped Warner Bros. secure 12 nominations; Netflix, on the other hand, shared 13 nods across its TV series and films, a smaller lead than in prior years (2023).

The television nominations are heavily influenced by British productions as well. For example, Succession is nominated for nine prizes, including eight for its cast members and one for outstanding drama.

Elizabeth Debecki, Dominic West, and Imelda Staunton are nominated for their roles in The Crown, which is also vying for best drama. While Rachel Weisz is nominated for the bold miniseries Dead Ringers, Helen Mirren gets honored for her work on 1923. A mention also goes to David Oyelowo’s efforts on Lawman: Bass Reeves.

Wilmer Valderrama and Cedric the Entertainer revealed the candidates; the presentation takes place on January 7, four days before the Oscar voting opens.

Although The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin, both of which were completely ignored at the Academy Awards, dominated the Globes last year, it is questionable how much of an influence the Golden Globes have on their more prestigious sister awards ceremony.

Golden Globe Awards voting

With the termination of the Globes’ long-standing partnership with NBC, this event is the first to be shown on the US network CBS. It’s also the first since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which had traditionally controlled and voted for the Globes, was banned during a significant backstage reorganization this summer.

To attempt and leverage access to stars for foreign-language journalists, the HFPA was established in 1944. Its credibility has been damaged by long-standing controversies. In addition to publicist boycotts, sexual assault scandals, and accusations of several ethical transgressions including potential bribery, the HFPA faced special criticism in 2021 when it was disclosed that none of its 91 voting members were Black.

Following the dissolution of the HFPA, Dick Clark Productions purchased the Globes’ assets, which had previously been a charity and were now a for-profit organization. A restructure that should enable more accountability has been implemented, along with the appointment of a new leadership team.

Golden Globe Awards members

The number of members has increased to 300 from 75 nations, with a large number of the new members being minorities. However, the group still looks quite different from the 6,000 and 10,000 Oscar voters, respectively, who are made up of professionals in the field rather than journalists covering it.
