Spurs Visit

When the Spurs visit the Pelicans on Friday night, the two previous No. 1 overall choices will square off against one another for the first time.

Both groups are managing Wembanyama and Williamson’s workload with an eye toward the future.

Wembanyama, who was doubtful due to a painful hip prior to participating in the Spurs’ 13th straight home loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday, 137-135, may not play on Friday, according to San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich.

Zion Williamson of Pelicans

In just 29 minutes against Atlanta, Wembanyama—who leads the Spurs in scoring, rebounds, blocks, and steals—finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, four blocked shots, and two steals. After the game, he claimed that his hip wasn’t bothering him.

We’re attempting to keep him safe,” Popovich remarked. “We’ll see how this plays out in terms of his hip.”

Williamson is a two-time All-Star, but a string of ailments plagued his first season, limiting his playing time.

Even though the season is just a month old, Williamson’s average of 24 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists is promising for New Orleans, as is the fact that He hasn’t had an injury keep him from playing.

Williamson Performance of Season

Williamson just had his finest performance of the season. In a 124-114 home victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, he scored a season-high 33 points on an even better 11-of-12 shooting effort from the field. Williamson has scored at least 25 points in six straight games.

Wembanyama

The Sixers, who were missing Joel Embiid due to sickness, never led the Pelicans, who had lost their previous two games on the road against the Utah Jazz.

Williamson stated, “We were coming off two bad losses.” “We wanted to get back in that win category, so I think that’s what really got us going.”

Before Philadelphia could get as close as eight points late in the fourth quarter, New Orleans jumped out to a 20-point lead at halftime and as much as a 29-point advantage.

The Pelicans got off to a fantastic start in the game, according to coach Willie Green. “We came out in the third quarter and we continued to play well — we only ended up winning (the third period) by one, but we played with the lead and persisted in attempting to develop it.”

Trey Murphy III, a forward/guard for the Pelicans, is anticipated to make his season debut on Friday. Murphy III has been out since September following meniscus surgery. On the other hand, New Orleans declared that center Larry Nance Jr. will miss four to six weeks due to aggravating his right rib injury.

Jeremy Sochan of the Spurs scored 33 points, a career high, against the Hawks. But when San Antonio attempted to tie the game with 2.7 seconds remaining—despite leading by as many as 15 points in the first half—he was called for a charge.

Twenty-one turnovers harmed San Antonio.

“If we cut down the turnovers by five or six, we win that game,” Sochan stated.

Pelicans Jersey

The Pelicans changed their red “Statement” jersey before the 2023–24 season. The words “Crescent City” are now written in white letters with navy blue trim, and white trim surrounds navy blue numbers. In addition, the striping was changed.
